On holiday in Italy. It’s home, but walking around I feel like an alien. Everything’s slow, relaxed. Easter means large tables full of food, long meals, catching up with family and friends. In the meantime the world is revolving, things are happening, but here everything’s still. Quiet.

Three exhibitions in one week, not bad. As promised, I went to the Barbican for Alvar Aalto, the Tate Modern for Gilbert&George, and to the National Portrait Gallery for Face of Fashion. Observations on the shows:
*I was expecting something more exciting from the Aalto display. The upper level is strictly organised according to the chronological development of his career. Pictures from the past, project designs by Aalto, and mock-ups. The lower ground is more about materials, techniques employed by the Finnish architect, and his production of lights (very interesting). Last section on his furniture design: too small!
*The G&G exhibition is great and really comprehensive. For the first time I saw the series of large charcoal drawings on cartoon from the early 1970s, and I found the Cherry Blossom pictures (red+black+white) absolutely astonishing. Eighteen rooms of colours, contrast, and provocation! Guardian review.
*The fashion exhibition is fun, gorgeous pictures by Paolo Roversi, Mario Sorrenti and others. My favorite, the portrait of artist Matthew Barney by Sorrenti, is a large-scale closeup of his face, a mix of creative energy and anxiety. Plus, I really enjoyed looking at the other visitors, fashion students, fashionistas and all that crowd!
